Surrealism: Andre Breton's Le Manifeste du Surréalisme (Manifesto of Surrealism) (1924) is often marked as the official start of surrealism. The techniques of surrealism include "automatic writing, self-induced hallucinations, and word games like the exquisite corpse to make manifest repressed mental activities," and included explorations with calligrams. Book arts and hybrid response to this school of poetry seems most closely aligned with this kind of poetry. This particular book project combines the feelings of surrealist thought and attempts to channel the feelings of the time period of surrealism. The accordion book tells a story, but the story is fragmented and can start and stop in many different ways. The story is about my mother's stroke -- and the surreal things she said and experienced during her stroke and afterwards.
